Meet the Superintendent SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE By Joseph H. Vicari As the 2011 calendar year comes to a close, it is time to look back and reflect on some of the wonderful accomplishments of the Berkeley Township School District community. Our students entered our doors in September brimming with enthusiasm. Our teachers have done a superb job of channeling that energy into academic accomplishments. The NJ ASK test scores for our district remain higher than other districts with a “B” district factor group designation. Our academic programs remain intact despite being faced with the task of doing more with less money. We have made a commitment to our local taxpayers, but also to our students to provide them with the best education that money can buy. On a personal note, I have agreed to lead this school district for a reduced salary which enabled us to save the jobs of several teachers. Along with strong academics, we believe in the value of character education. We have various programs in all schools that acknowledge good behavior. We educate our students through lessons, assemblies, and examples on how to be persons of good character. We have been proactive in implementing the New Jersey law regarding bullying. We promote good citizenship by our participation in community events and our study of the United States Constitution and the important role of our veterans. As always, the safety and security of our students and staff will remain a priority. Each school principal prepares students for emergency situations that may arise by practicing several safety drills each month. Outside doors in each school remain locked and can be accessed through the use of a buzz-in system. All visitors to our schools are required to sign in during their visits and all employees are required to carry identification badges. I encourage parents and all community members to be involved in our schools. We have intergenerational and volunteer programs available for your participation. The dates of monthly Board of Education meetings are posted on the district website. If you would like to know the news from each of our four schools, please access the monthly newsletters that are available through the websites of each school. It is an honor to serve as the superintendent of the Berkeley Township School District. Please join me in my commitment to keep this district as a model of educational excellence.
